appropriation readings for discussion wk3

everyone is to read for discussion on week 3:
the lane relyea article on heather's work, it's on the portal
as well as the rosalind krauss essay on the portal 'the originality of the avant garde'...

the other two readings  marked wk2 on the class portal aren't required, but suggested by heather!

wk2 appropriation

students:

tomorrow we'll
1. discuss sally mckay article on affective qualities of gifs
2. crit gifs...start thinking about the vocabulary we'll need to critically engage this form
3. guest lecturer heather mekkelson talks about her work, a very elegant form of appropriation
4. watch a surprise movie that is an epic plunge into filmic appropriation

there is a wealth of existing content in culture that requires us to be deft editors.  editing is the new brushstroke.  facebook is a vessel of infinite paint splatters.  even if you're traditional artistic practice is dominated by creating original content, the muscle of editing content at a high level is de rigueur for any original content creation.

your assignment:  show us work that adds significant meaning to existing cultural content...

why
there will not be time for a standard lecture...i assume many of you have appropriated before and have a basic sense of the topography of appropriation.  here is a list of artists to look up for additional inspiration:
-christian marclay's the clock!!! epic!!!
-penelope umbrico
-erik kessels
-joachim schmid
-evidency by larry sultan and mike mandel
-wolfgang ploger
-zoe krosher
-harrell fletcher
-temporary services
-stephen shearer
-ofer wolberger
-sherrie levine
-richard prince
-robert heinecken
-cory arcangel
-david horvitz
-joy drury cox (old man and the sea publication)

gif assignment

students:

as discussed in class, please make 3 gifs for presentation next week.  remember, don't follow conventions/cliche...find your own way to OWN this content creating strategy:

1.  make a gif with original imagery
2.  make a gif with appropriate imagery
3.  make a 3 frame gif or a text gif
4.  for extra karma, make a gif that participates in an existing meme (i.e. deal with it).  this requires you not to resist convention but to embrace it!

gif making resources

students:

there are a number of awful tutorials out there--some hard to read, a lot of mumbling, most influenced by some synthetic energy drink!  feel free to explore on your own or employ a website to automate the gif making process.  if you have photoshop skills, you'll enjoy the precision you have when constructing your own and making surgical aesthetic decisions...

here is one of the better tutorials i found (this one assumes you already made a folder of photos that contains sequenced stills):

a tutorial on making a sequence of frames as you go (animating graphics):

Welcome to Voice Lessons

Get signed up on the class blog.  This is always a hassle as saic email accounts are not usually compatible with blogger–send me a non-saic email address you check regularly (if you don't have one, sign up) so I can invite you into the blogger platform.  Once signed up you will be able to post/link/write/share, which is essential over the course of the term.
